1.0 Notes

Introduction

This document contains notes regarding DesktopBSD 1.0, such as information about installation, known bugs, security issues and fixes. Please consult this document before reporting bugs.

Overview

DesktopBSD aims at being a stable and powerful operating system for desktop users. DesktopBSD 1.0 is based on FreeBSD 5-STABLE from 5 February 2006 and KDE 3.5.1. See the DesktopBSD website for further details.

Changes

Please read the 1.0 changelog that contains new features and bugfixes since 1.0-RC3.

Installation

Download either the installation DVD or CD image (if available) for your architecture from the download site and burn it on a DVD-R or CD-R. If you downloaded the CD image and want to use DesktopBSD in a language other than English, please also download the language packages CD and burn it (this is not necessary for the DVD since it includes these language packages).

Insert the installation media before your computer boots. You probably have to change the boot order of your BIOS to be able to boot from your CD/DVD drive. When the computer boots, wait until the installer appears and follow the instructions. After the installation finished, don't forget to remove the media from your drive so your computer won't boot from it again.

When booting DesktopBSD the first time, a configuration wizard will appear. You can now install support additional languages using the language packages CD or the installation DVD. After that, set the system password, add at least one administrator user and read the short introduction to the concepts of DesktopBSD.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed and configured your new DesktopBSD installation!

Upgrading

There is no way to upgrade the whole system from a previous release candidate. Experienced users can, however, upgrade the installed DesktopBSD tools following these instructions (and soon using the package manager).

French - Français
German - Deutsch

Differences between the CD and DVD versions

While the CD version includes only a basic set of applications, the DVD versions include a wider range of applications for home and office use:

amaroK, a music player
Firefox webbrowser
Gaim, an instant messenger
GIMP, an image editor
The KDE Accessibility, Education, Games and Web Development packages
KDevelop, an integrated development environment for KDE
OpenOffice.org 2.0.2, an office suite (see below for the 64-bit version)
VideoLAN Client (VLC), a media player
XChat 2, an IRC client

Notes for users of 64-Bit systems (AMD64)

Since there is no 64-bit version of OpenOffice.org yet, KOffice 1.4.2 is included instead. If you want KOffice in a language other than English, please install the koffice-i18n-* package for your language (for example german/koffice-i18n, chinese/koffice-i18n-zh_CN, misc/koffice-i18n-da).
Adding a printer in the KDE control center fails with a message that your user is not authorized to access this resource. As a workaround, please switch to the administrator mode before by using the button at the bottom left.
